JMonkeyEngine

OVERVIEW

jMonkeyEngine is a full featured Software Development Kit (SDK) game engine and Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Java. If you are looking for a single tool to do everything, jMonkeyEngine is a good choice. It is also open source, free, even for commercial projects, and runs on many different platforms, including Android. JmonkeyEngine is also very extendable. It comes with many plugins and tools.

JAVA/JDK

jMonkeyEngine is written in Java, so it requires the Java Development Kit (JDK). You will need to download and install the JDK if it is not already preloaded on your computer. You can get the latest JDK from here. The jMonkeyEngine SDK download includes the NetBeans IDE for Java. It comes preloaded and configured for jMonkeyEngine. You do not need the full version of NetBeans IDE to run jMonkeyEngine. All you need is the SDK and JDK.

API

jMonkeyEngine includes routines for Shaders, Lighting, and Texturing. It also has Special Effects routines for fire, smoke, explosions, water, shadows, and fog. jMonkeyEngine is one of the few game engines that natively supports networking, so you can quickly create interactive multi-player games with client/server support. You can use the GUI routines for making drop-down menus, list boxes, and text fields. These features may seem simple to the casual user, but are actually complex to do in full graphics mode without a good library. jMonkeyEngine also incorporates Bullet Physics, Terrain mapping for realistic 3D worlds, and supports many different audio and video formats. Most of the common game logic routines are also directly supported like, mouse, keyboard, and joystick input routines, application state and controls, and a camera system for multiple views.

TEAMS

A modular asset system allows game designers and programmers to work on different components independently. This helps you be more efficient through Rapid Application Development (RAD) techniques.
